    I can honestly say, for myself, diet and exercise changed my life completely. I was taking Cymbalta, Wellbutrin (2x daily) and kolonopin for depression/anxiety. I was morbidly obese, and miserable. My husband and I made the choice to change our lives and start trying to live healthier for ourselves and the betterment of our family. I have been doing this for 6 months now, and have lost around 45lbs. (I don’t really keep track of numbers, only by the way I feel). I no longer take the Cymbalta, or kolonopin. I am down to Wellbutrin only once a day now, and the blood pressure medicine I was on is cut in half also. I did all of this with the help of my physician, and with the love and support of my family. I don’t think I would have made these changes if I hadn’t started living healthier. It helped to put my thoughts back into positive choices, and I am so happy now. We have to choose to be happy and make good decisions. Great article!!

      Trish, you’re an absolute inspiration! You’re right: the key is to be healthier, not skinnier. I am so proud of you, and amazed at the way your healthy lifestyle changes helped you stop taking medication! You hear stories like that, but to know someone who’s really doing it makes it real, you know! I’ve said it before, but really, GO YOU!!

    I am a thyroid cancer survivor, middle-aged and PISSED. I walk an hour a day, 6 days a week on an incline of 5.5 and walk as fast as I can without falling (3.4). I can’t lose weight to save my life. I refuse to run because, 1st I can’t and 2nd I know runners who eventually need joint replacement surgery and I want no part of that. My medication is 500mg of Seroquel, 10mg of Xanax, and 80mg of Geoddon. To ME I eat pretty healthy but the scale is telling me something different. Day in Day out I exercise and see LITTLE result, it’s it’s it’s just so discouraging. Good article, but I’m just so DEPRESSED I can’t see straight. Desiree Cart Dugas

      Hi Desiree!

      First of all, congrats to you for kicking cancer’s @$$! I lost my father to cancer last fall, and I know what a battle it is.

      Second, I’m not a doctor, so please don’t take what I’m getting ready to say as advice of any sort (especially medical advice) but maybe it’s more important to focus on your overall health than what the scale says? Many times, what the scale says has nothing to do with how healthy our bodies are. Is your main focus right now weight, and if so, what kind of weight are we walking about? 10 pounds? 15? 20?

      Third, if the combination of your recovery, your medicine, and your physical limitations genuinely keep your weight at a place that’s contributing to your depression (which is definitely counterproductive!), talk to your doctor about it. If you already have, try again. Make sure your concerns are heard and addressed. I know some conditions cause weight gain, and some medicines do, too (Seroquel has that risk, doesn’t it?), so with enough discussion and trial-and-error, you two might find a way to help you get some of that weight off and still treat your conditions.
