Go to the…Source!
A thinking, intelligent person (namely You!:) realizes “source” is important for accuracy!
If information, knowledge and wisdom = power…does “just any” knowledge or “just any” information = Truth?! (We all have all kinds of internet-information at our fingertips…is it all reliable?!) How do you “measure” accuracy? All of us…want a “measure” of power/control over our life…accurate knowledge/truth can take us where we want to go.
Map truth! Patiently stitch it together!:)
“Accurate” information, knowledge = Truth. Accurate Knowledge is “highly” valuable! Accurate knowledge could be life-saving or life-sustaining. Don’t you want to sustain or save your life? If you value life, your life or any life–shouldn’t you value truth??
People from all walks of life turn to all sorts of stuff/people/books/places for greater insight, knowledge, wisdom to perhaps, elevate their quality of living or quantity/longevity of living. As a compassionate, flexible-investigator (see my 2 last posts for context: Love, Flowers & Chocolates & Boyle, Sagan: Scientific and Spiritual “Understanding” of Life Interdependency Part 3) wherever or to whomever you turn for information/knowledge…is your source reliable??
It’s smart to check source reliability…something i’m always working on myself. Do you value authenticity? Do you value reliability? (i do!:) Sadly, we live in a world where some like/need power (over others) and resort to playing mind games and/or lies…and attempt to mess with our mind (or think they are messing with our mind).
Please, think, decide for yourself and use your gift: your mind to make wise choices leading to more compassionate living!:)
Are you a believer/accepter…of just any information coming at you? (i’m NOT a “blind” believer…/ i try to be an “awake” accepter “after” i thoroughly investigate the information/source for myself to ascertain accuracy and authenticity.
i encourage you to keep investigating the knowledge you possess as to accuracy and authenticity….keep an
o-p-e-n-a-t-t-i-t-u-d-e/mindset by adding to your Wisdom/Truth bank account. Where do you go for wisdom?…Where do you go for help?…when things get tough?
The Buddha & The Bible
“To appreciate how well established the text of the Bible is, we have only to compare it with another body of literature that has come to us from antiquity: the classical writings of Greece and Rome. In fact, most of this literature was written after the Hebrew scriptures were completed. There were no recorded genocide attempts against the Greeks or the Romans, and their literature was not preserved in the face of persecution.” Yet, notice the comments of Professor F. F. Bruce:
“For Caesar’s Gallic War (composed between 58 and 50 B.C.) there are several extant MSS, but only nine or ten are good, and the oldest is some 900 years later than Caesar’s day.”
“Of the 142 books of the Roman history of Livy (59 B.C.-A.D. 17), only 35 survive; these are known to us from not more than twenty MSS of any consequence, only one of which, and that containing fragments of Books III-VI, is as old as the fourth century.”
“Of the fourteen books of the Histories of Tacitus (c. A.D. 100) only four and a half survive; of the sixteen books of his Annals, ten survive in full and two in part. The text of these extant portions of his two great historical works depends entirely on two MSS, one of the ninth century and one of the eleventh…
“The History of Thucydides (c. 460-400 B.C.) is known to us from eight MSS, the earliest belonging to c. A.D. 900, and a few papyrus scraps, belonging to about the beginning of the Christian era.”
“The same is true of the History of Herodotus (c. 488-428 B.C.). Yet no classical scholar would listen to an argument that the authenticity of Herodotus or Thucydides is in doubt because the earliest MSS of their works which are of any use to us are over 1,300 years later than the originals.” —The Books and the Parchments, page. 180.
“Compare this with the fact that there are thousands of manuscripts of various parts of the Bible. And manuscripts of the Christian Greek Scriptures go back to within a hundred years of the time of the writing of the original books.” ~The Bible–God’s Word or Man’s ? The Bible’s Fight to Live
“What is known of the Buddha’s life is based mainly on the evidence of the canonical texts, the most extensive and comprehensive of which are those written in Pali, a language of ancient India,” says the book World Religions–From Ancient History to the Present. What this means is that there is no source material of his time to tell us anything about Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, who lived in northern India in the sixth century B.C.E. That, of course, presents a problem. However, more serious is the question of when and how the “canonical texts” were produced.”
“Buddhist tradition holds that soon after the death of Gautama, a council of 500 monks was convened to decide what was the authentic teaching of the Master. Whether such a council actually did take place is a subject of much debate among Buddhist scholars and historians. The important point we should note, however, is that even Buddhist texts acknowledge that the authentic teaching decided upon was not committed to writing but memorized by the disciples. Actual writing of the sacred texts had to wait for a considerable time.”
“According to Sri Lankan chronicles of the fourth and sixth centuries C.E., the earliest of these Pali “canonical texts” were put in writing during the reign of King Vattagamani Abhaya in the first century B.C.E. Other accounts of the Buddha’s life did not appear in writing until perhaps the first or even the fifth century C.E., nearly a thousand years after his time.”…(i didn’t realize that long length of time…a 1,000 years…leaves lots of wiggle room, eh?)
“Thus, observes the Abingdon Dictionary of Living Religions, “The ‘biographies’ are both late in origin and replete with legendary and mythical material, and the oldest canonical texts are the products of a long process of oral transmission that evidently included some revision and much addition.” ~ Mankind’s Search for God
Obviously, this quick post touches the surface of this deep topic of The Buddha & The Bible… “may” write further on this or not!…(Meanwhile, in the process of writing a “light” post…a “fun” experiment…it’s almost ready; it’s full of fluff!:)
I remain ever positive in my quest for Truth, accurate knowledge, compassionate living/care-giving and loving! i implore you to remember to check your sources for accuracy and authenticity…not always an easy task/takes work & effort…can be time consuming, but worth it! Don’t be a blind believer. Be an Awake Accepter!:)
A question one must consider: When it comes to history…is any of it genuine?…with this question in mind, found the following points interesting/reassuring to contemplate:
“Unlike ancient secular histories, the Bible frankly records the human failings of respected figures such as Moses and David. In fact, the Bible in itself bears the stamp of accurate history. Events are linked to specific times and dates, unlike those of most ancient myths and legends. Many events recorded in the Bible are supported by inscriptions dating from those times. Where there is a difference between the Bible and some ancient inscriptions, the discrepancy can often be attributed to the ancient rulers’ distaste for recording their own defeats and their desire to magnify their successes.”
“Indeed, many of those ancient inscriptions are not history as much as they are official propaganda. In contrast, the Bible writers display a rare frankness. Major ancestral figures such as Moses and Aaron are revealed with all their weaknesses and strengths. Even the failings of the great king David are honestly revealed. The shortcomings of the nation as a whole are repeatedly exposed. This candor recommends the Hebrew Scriptures as truthful and reliable…” ~The Bible God’s Word or Man’s?
Frank candor and willingness to admit weakness…impressive to me! How many ancient and/or modern rulers/leaders/kings/queens honestly/openly admit/reveal their repeated shortcomings/flaws??…and don’t have a PR person (damage control) and/or speech writer making them look and sound good/better than what they really are?!
That’s all she wrote:) for now (on this topic)…THANKS for reading!! THANKS for putting up with my very obvious flaws …i have so much to work on as caregiver, partner, mother, girl, fragile life, friend…trying not to get discouraged and down. Don’t we all have to battle discouragement when you’re tired or over-working!…love and compassion & authenticity and accuracy are such lofty goals, eh? (Every day is another opportunity to expand my compassion.) New day/new work! Happy Week-end & Peace to All…
especially to the authentic among us!🙂
