Refocusing on Simple Pleasures

When I’m feeling overwhelmed and there’s a lot going on, I like to refocus on simple pleasures. Because it’s very easy for me to get panicked and go to a very negative place. A place filled with “I can’ts,” catastrophes, rigidity and headaches.

So I try to refocus. I try to breathe in the beauty of right now and create my own sweet moments. I know that all of us have a lot going on. So, today, and this weekend, let’s refocus on doing just that: finding magic and creating some of our own in the smallest and most accessible ways.

Here are some examples:

  • Looking up to watch the clouds, and following their movements.
  • Staring at the trees (or a picture of trees, depending on where you are).
  • Taking a break for one minute and savoring a piece of dark chocolate. For that entire, full minute. (Set a timer if that helps.)
  • Taking 10 minutes out of your day for a hot shower. Paying particular attention to the water on your skin.
  • Taking 5 minutes out of your day to write someone a thank-you note. Someone you really love and really want to thank for just being wonderful.
  • Hugging your partner (or child or any loved one) and being in that hug. Feeling the warmth of the embrace. Letting that hug be everything in that moment.
  • Closing your eyes and giving them a break.
  • Lighting a candle and looking at the flame.
  • Feeling your heart beat.
  • Smelling your favorite scent. Smelling flowers, if you have them at home, or smelling flowers at the store.
  • Turning on your favorite song. Doing nothing but listening. Or writing about whatever arises.
  • Visualizing what calm means to you, and staying with that image for a few minutes. Reminding yourself that this calm is always within you. It’s just that sometimes it’s hidden by a big, thick curtain, which you can totally remove.
  • Snapping a quick picture of something that’s making you happy right now, or something that tends to soothe you.

When life gets busy and overwhelming, it’s natural to freak out. Instead, try to refocus on simple pleasures and on using your senses to the fullest. And when I say simple pleasures, I mean really simple. Think of sweet, uncomplicated, effortless things. You can even list one sweet, small thing you’ll enjoy right now or today.
