Today I Love Folk Everything

clean kitchen, coffee
I like it when the kitchen is clean

Today I love folk everything, like art and music and crafts and food. I love preserves so much that I leaf through my pickling recipes and read them like the pages of a novel. I love folk art and I especially love the stuff with funny oddities in it that make me say, “What???” I love that folk art looks like anyone could do it but then when I try I remember that I can’t draw a crooked line without tracing it. I love that the brilliance in folk art is almost always in the subject selection and the color selection and the moods just come from that. I love that folk crafts often lead to cottage industries that blossom and grow and live for a while until another craft comes along. I love folk music because it is the simplest form of music and yet calls forth emotions and paints pictures that demand attention. I love folk music also because it is what I write and what I perform and what I get to play lots of on the radio once every four weeks. I love that I have folk musician friends and that we music lots, sometimes spontaneously and together, though not so much recently. I love that I’ve been part of several open mics held virtually in the last few months. I love virtual folk things.

Today I love that it is Monday and we are getting things done. I love that this week is going to be about the busiest week of the summer for me and that means by this coming weekend I am going to need to get me some rest. I love that I intend to rest from 5 to 7PM live on the radio chatting with my folk musician friend and fellow radio show host, Kailey Hawkins, that should be some fun right there. I love that once this coming week and weekend is over I may just sleep for two or three days.

Today I love plans to make food for the week that I think will be happening shortly along with a bunch of house cleaning and some errand running. I love that I have made some serious plans to make my studio more usable and to repair my main computer system, create a studio system and get my backup system figured out so that when things go foul on any one of them I will not lose data again. I love not losing data.

Today I Love drinking my coffee in the kitchen while it just gets cleaner and cleaner and cleaner!

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
