Today I Love That I Live Here

maple leaves clinging to bare branches

Today I love that I live here, and that I can peacefully acknowledge that I am living and working on the traditional, historical, and ancestral lands of the Chippewas of Nawash. I love that I can claim friends among the first people of this land, that they are worthy of my respect not just because they are good and honorable people but because they accept me and my friendship and have been patient with me and my very slow learning. I love that there is a bitter taste in my mouth about many things that have been done to other humans for wrong reasons because that taste tells me I am learning still. I love that the mark of honor is on these people who were here first, and shows in the fact that I am still accepted by them as a friend. I love that today we celebrate the 153rd birthday of Canada as a country and while it is far from perfect I love that there is a concerted effort in more recent times to unbury our dark past and make it right. I love that while that effort seems to have stalled in some ways on many fronts there are people here in this country that are calling out this hesitation and demanding it be restarted. I love that my Canada is full of my kind of people and my kind of people are of every color and of every gender and everything in between because my kind of people are people who accept all others. Oh Canada, we all stand on guard for thee.

Today I love that Canada is still a youngster and that gives me cause to hope that we are still learning to eventually be a mature and responsible nation that embraces the cultures of all of its inhabitants. I love that while we find our way, we still have much to be proud of, and I intend to take some time today to consider those things as well as how far we have to go yet, no one can struggle to be better if all they see is wrong in their identity. I love that we get to grow up here.

Today I love plans to work today on our house renovation and I love that we hope to finish the subfloor which will make the whole downstairs seem like a real main floor in a real house again. I love that yesterday I spent much of my time cooking and baking in my kitchen and I enjoyed every minute of it. I love that I actually grilled things on the cook top inside last night, look at me go!!!

Today I love drinking coffee on this 153rd iteration of Canada Day, the official birthday of our still young nation in training.

Today I Love That I Live Here

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
