Contentment on board

Today I love peaceful days of contentment, I wonder if this will be one of those. I love that even when I’m busy there are days that seem to me to be peaceful. I love that today was to be my family’s reunion that happens every year. I love that we have been reuniting so long that there is only one of us born with the name that we honor each year. I love that I am a McKinlay despite that name not being part of mine. I love that I have written under that name when I was writing things that didn’t seem to match my other work. I love that I still keep the name, Taylor McKinlay in reserve for when I wish to write stuff that I want considered without the bias of my name as author so that the reader has no preconceived idea of what it might contain. I love that I came across that name honestly, as my own name is a combination of my paternal grandparents surnames and so, Taylor McKinlay is a combination of my maternal grandparents surnames. I love how that contrivance is at once simple yet cerebral and that makes me happy. I love that I will answer to either name, eventually, though few people address me as Taylor and none consistently.

Today I love that the bay water here in my part of this glorious world is warmed up enough that I can wade in, jump in, or fall in and there’s no real issues with getting used to it any more. I love that we have arrived at the jumping in without hesitation time of the year. I love that when I was a kid I had one bathing suit at any given time and I guarded it with my very life because I thought there was nothing more mortifying than the idea that I couldn’t go swimming for lack of the proper costume. I love that now I have several and often wear more than one a day and if they run out I learned as a teenager to swim in cutoff jeans and I’m prepared to continue that fad with little or no encouragement from anyone.

Today I love fish cooked perfectly and shared with family, that might well be on the menu tonight. I love how adventurous we are when it comes to our menu, and yet we know what our favorites are. I love that freshly made jam is a thing here in my life, and I can make more at any time.

Today I love drinking coffee with a side of homemade bread and home made jam, while I ponder my peace and contentment.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
