Today I Love George Floyd

Today I love George Floyd.

Today I love strong people marching in the support of an ancient and worthy cause, ’cause black lives matter and all lives will never matter until we make sure that everyone knows that black lives matter, I mean, how could all lives possibly matter if black people are still being treated like they don’t? I love that, until I took a knee for eight minutes and forty-six seconds, I didn’t know how long that was. I love that every time I thought about how uncomfortable I was I asked myself what George Floyd must have been thinking and feeling at that time and that made my discomfort a joke. I love that at the end I decided that eight minutes and forty-six seconds should be just exactly enough time to change the world, for George’s sake it better be. I love that so many people turned out for that walk in the worst heat we’ve had on record for that day of the year yesterday.  I love that so many people that I knew were there, because it’s nice to have your suspicions confirmed when you think you can count on your friends and acquaintances. I love that it was obvious to the 1000 or more people at the march and in the park that this is an issue of importance.

Today I love that the heat broke last evening as the march ended, I love that there was time for the marchers to get home before the storm and the rain. I love when things work out. I love that I am having less trouble breathing today. I love that I feel like today is a better day to record a radio show and I love that today is the day that I plan to record my next radio show. I love that I get to play great music on the air and share our local talent and the talent of people who play locally. I love music and music has always treated me well. I love that music has even used me to create a few songs.

Today I love supporting local restaurants. I love that I won a gift certificate to Amici Pizza in the next town over and I love their pizza. I love that we are so torn between trying to support local shops and wanting to make use of our new kitchen that sometimes it gives me a headache to ponder my dinner options, but the gift certificate will definitely tip the scales.

Today I love sipping my coffee in the coolness of this easier day and remembering the great and powerful turnout at yesterday’s march for #Black Lives Matter.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
