Today I Love Dates

Today I love dates, all kinds of dates. I love palm dates because I especially love making and eating date squares. I love dates in the evening with my partner where we do things together like walking and talking and laughing and golfing and dancing and reading and listening to music and watching TV together. I love dates for action like the one we just got for when our new counter tops will be in and consequentially when our new sink and our cook top will be installed and usable. I love dates that indicate when good things happen and I love dates that tell of when bad things ended. I love making dates for coffee and for deadlines and for vacations and other good things like that. I love my memories of having dates when I was young, of the conflicting emotions of needing to socialize and being so very afraid that it would reveal me to be completely inept at socializing. I love that socializing is a learned skill and though I’m not very good at it I am persistent and enjoy it much more than I did way back then in my youth, forty to fifty years ago. I love that I will keep making dates for a long time to come if I have my way.

Today I love this rainy day with its hammering downpours that are driving down onto the roof and the deck like they’re playing the biggest thundering drum they could find as hard as they can. I love Spring’s construction work, love that I know how it will likely turn out, with carpets of green and flashes of color in the corners and rows, and every now and then a bit of maintenance in the form of another rain. I love that things are already growing wonderfully well out there, that the dandelions are flowering on the lawn and the rhubarb is up taking in as much rain as it can in order to grow big and tasty. I love that the day lilies are sprouted and I’m looking forward to the blooms and the salads we’ll make out of those flowers.

Today I love getting back to work on the renovation front here at the blue castle. I love that our renovation coincides with Spring’s own construction. I love that we will hopefully be finished here around the same time that Spring turns the world over for Summer occupancy. I love that we still have a long way to go but we know we can put up with things in partially finished states, this whole new world reality has taught us that we can be resilient and patient when we need to be.

Today I love coffee and the way it helps keep my pain at bay by augmenting my anti-inflammatory medications, go coffee.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
