Today I Love This Soft January Day

curling rock on the button
Someone on my team can throw a good rock!

Today I love this soft January day with melting snow and ice and easy wisps of damp, fragrant air, the smell of evergreens and earth and that faint hint of Spring to let us know she’s on her way in just 8 weeks. I love how sweet a good January thaw can be, especially when it comes in an easy winter like this one has been for us here. I love that the snow was removed from downtown over the past week and that people can get from their parked cars to the sidewalk without having to walk down the road to find access. I love that my barbecue is all thawed out and is looking at me like I need to get busy and think up something to cook on it. I love winter barbecuing almost as much as summer barbecuing and in some ways maybe a little bit more. I love how good it is to taste something that reminds me of summer in the middle of the winter.I love mixing up the days and weeks and years. I love making adventures out of doing normal things at abnormal times. I love writing outside in the spring and the fall even if I have to write fast to get things done before my fingers go numb. I love the outside, I love being in it, I love looking out at it, I love being inside and opening the window on it to have the best of all the sides, out and in.

Today I love chasing the months of my life and demanding they give me every bit of joy I can squeeze from them. I love that last night the curling match did not go my way, but we played well and almost pulled it out in the end. I love that I had a few good shots and so did every body else. I love that my lead threw a rock right onto the pin in the center of the button when I asked her to and it was an amazing shot. I love that I threw a rock that wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do and in the middle of its travel I called the sweepers to change what they were doing and devised a plan “B” and we actually had a better shot than I was supposed to throw. I love this crazy game. I love that my partner is often a better curler than I am.

Today I love breakfast at the farmers’ market with the winning curling skip and that she bought my breakfast for me. I love good winners.

Today I love drinking coffee while I write about things I love before heading out for a road trip adventure.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
