Today I love sunshine through cedars dappling the walls of the cottage and shimmering in the rusty leaves of the maples. I love that it is supposed to be a rainy day but the painted escarpment across the bay in Bruce county is shimmering in spots of light and no rain has fallen yet. I love when shadows and light run along that bluff and race to the islands out on the open water. I love that if this weather keeps up I will be cutting the grass here today for likely the last time this year. I love the cottage days that we spend here and even though we’re off to dinner again today and will end up at home tonight I love knowing that on any given weekend we could end up here just enjoying this place like we always do. I love Sunny Sundays and Sundays that are partly sunny are even better because every time the sun goes in and then comes out again I’m reminded that it is there. I love the smell of cedars especially when the sun warms them up. I love how cedars seem to be a natural part of every season, they are part of my memories of the entire year’s spectrum of weather and light. I love all the trees, but cedars have an ancient character that makes me very fond of them in ways no other trees can ever lay claim to.
Today I love that we are off to our second Thanksgiving family dinner in as many days. I love that all through the year there are reasons for families to gather together and if a family needs that to remind them to gather than there they are on the calendar. I love that my family both needs that and yet doesn’t, occasionally getting together for absolutely no reason whatsoever and then going for weeks and maybe months without gathering in one place until some occasion comes along and gathers us up and we embrace and chatter away with each other like we’ve never been apart since our childhood.
Today I love quiet talks in the predawn morning as the daylight slowly comes up out of the east. I love planning things that might never happen just so that we are ready for them if they do. I love playing what if with big ifs like what if we moved to Spain or what if we bought a dairy farm or what if I started wearing a toga all the time, just to have things to talk about that both entertain and educate. I love pie.
Today I love drinking coffee in bed while the sun shines through the cedars and falls filtered on the cottage walls.
