Today I Love Hiking The Bruce Trail

outside view at the cottage
A beautiful day

Today I love hiking the Bruce Trail, though obviously I’m not hiking all of it, since I don’t have time for a little 400 plus mile jaunt on foot this week. I love that we walked for a couple of hours on one of the side trail loops and I saw three things that I knew were edible because I recognized them from growing up in that area, and I ate two of them, the apples and the wild, and oh so bitter, tiny dark grapes. I love that I would have scored the puff ball and brought it home to eat if I’d had a big enough knife to take it off without disturbing the root and if I’d had a bag big enough too. I love that we’ve eaten puffball already this year. I love that it started out to be a dark and dreary day but by the time we got out on the trail it was mostly sunny and quite bright. I love that we walked uphill most of the way and downhill fairly quickly the last part. I love that my crazy smart watch told me we walked up more than 75 yards of elevation while dodging rocks and trees and mud holes and going up and down over little humps and hollers , pretty good for an old guy. I love walking in the bush, love how much there is to see and experience, and I love that the Bruce Trail passes so close to us where we live, and at the cottage, and where I grew up as well.

Today I love that we have plans for groceries and cooking and getting ready for the rest of this week. I love that there is learn to curl on tonight and on Thursday again, and open ice tomorrow and Wednesday for those who want to get themselves back into the swing of things. I love that even though my health is not as good as it was last year, I can still get down into the hack and throw a rock with reasonably similar accuracy compared to last year, which is to say poorly, but not worse.

Today I love that we are eating home grown pimentos which are not hot but are also not cool, they have a pleasant sting of warmth that makes me smile a little bit. I love that we are planning on putting them into a rice dish that is meant to be a little warm and they should be perfect for that.

Today I love drinking coffee at the cottage in the morning light while I write and get ready for a doughnut run … I mean grocery run, yeah, that’s what I meant, we’re going for groceries, very important don’t you see.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
