Today I Love Working Hard

Summerfolk garbage can
Merfolk are the best folk

Today I love working hard at the things I do. I love thinking things out and doing things that make future work easier. I love that I took the legs off of a deck like platform to make it ready for storage and once they were off I screwed them to the underside out of the way but handy for when we put it together next year. I love jobs like Summerfolk tear down where, if I can’t find someone to tell me what they need done next, I can always see something that needs doing. I love finding things to do and finding good ways to do things. I love that I see funny things all the time, like that the Summerfolk garbage cans say SUMMERFOLK but you can’t read it all at once because the word stretches around the top of the can and so some of them appear to say MERFOLK from the right angle. I love that I sometimes refer to my fellow volunteers as Merfolk because of that. I love that I am proud to be one of the Merfolk and that I will always come back if I am able and if they will have me. I love that this is one of my favorite pieces of hard work.

Today I love the beautiful place that I live, the wonderful sights of blue sky, the vistas of water and rock and trees that are everywhere. I love that these scenesĀ  are ubiquitous and yet they do not disappear into the background because of their ubiquity. I love having so many opportunities to see the sights in my area, every time I have to drive somewhere, any time I’m riding with someone going somewhere, any time I go for a walk, this part of the world enthralls me. I love that when we travel I get to admire other places, but when I come home I still love it here.

Today I love Summerfolk backstage cake. I love getting to meet people who travel for a living, whether they perform or whether they set up stage equipment. I love watching giant tents come down and imagining what circus life must have been like. I love finding things that need my attention, like the pointy ends of nails sticking out of city picnic tables. I love that I can fix that … hand me a hammer! I love that I always have a hammer with me if I have my truck with me.

Today I love drinking coffee while I write right in the middle of Summerfolk tear down, surrounded by Merfolk.

Today I Love Working Hard

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
