Today I love this cool fresh morning and the taste of August’s sweetness in the air. I love that the yard is looking a little meadow like and I may just leave it that way for a bit since it isn’t really looking out of control, just a bit ragged. I love that it makes me shake my head to contemplate that cutting grass uses energy which is detrimental to the environment and at the same time it reduces the lawn’s ability to play its part in helping the environment to recover, and that’s a lesson on compounding issues. I love that we keep talking about plowing up the lawn and putting in garden space and I love that every time we eat something out of what little garden we have we want to do that even more. I love that my idea of the perfect good neighbor fence is a hedgerow of raspberry canes, keep those neighbors on their own side of the property line and feed ’em at the same time. I love old memories of picking berries in the bush with my family when I was a child, and I miss those sweet, wonderful pearls of fruit and those sweet wonderful people that took us out to do that. I love that it was fun, and a very real part of our diet and livelihood as we would bring home many buckets full of berries and they would be preserved and fed to us over the rest of the year until it was berry picking time again. I love that it took longer to pick berries than their value as food would warrant, but their value as a treat made that time worth the expenditure and their value to us in the winter was beyond measure.
Today I love that it is Friday and if I can I’ll be heading down to the open mic at the Bleeding Carrot to maybe play a song or two and definitely to listen to the talent that this town has. I love that more people have stepped up to host this important aspect of the arts in our town. I love Fridays for many reasons, but music is one of the biggest ones for me because I do so very much love music. I love writing it and performing it and hosting it and playing it on the radio and TV as well. I love helping to promote new music and new musicians and new music from old musicians too.
Today I love strawberry/peach porridge and the fact that there’s a big old whack of it in a pot in our fridge and we had some for breakfast today and it was pretty fine.
Today I love drinking coffee while I revel in the wondrous sweetness of August’s pleasingly cool mornings as she turns on the heat to warm up the day to what is expected to be perfect for this time of year.
