Today I Love July’s Green Glory

The July colors

Today I love July’s green glory that fills the summer world with deep and restful color. I love the way July punctuates that green with all the other colors, from flowers and blossoms to sky and water. I love how our front flower bed is once again alive with color even though the Columbine have dropped their petals and gotten busy preparing to seed themselves down again. I love the wild spectrum that runs from mauve and purple through coral and orange and red, all sprinkled with white and pale green above the dark green leaves and stems. I love the dwarf Spruce trees standing sentinel at each corner of the triangular bed that makes the front “wall” of our verandah. I love the beautiful black crow, Nip, and his partner Tuck, that hang out here at the blue castle and I love that I was introduced to L.M. Montgomery’s book of that same name just in time to experience something similar in my life. I love that Nip’s feathers are so black and that they shine in spots and yet look dry and dusty in others and their black is such a deep and empty shade of noir that he looks more like a hole in the world than an entity. I love that this morning he is calling to me from different places around the house and seems quite determined to distract me.

Today I love that there is someone here in my household who has the presence of mind to remind me of my memory test, because I had forgotten. I love that I can find the humor in that. I love that the even funnier part is that I just made the appointment yesterday. I love that in true Kelly fashion, I hadn’t forgotten that I’d made the appointment for a memory test, just when I’d made it for …”Is that today?” I love that I remember things that others forget or never noticed, I will remember where I saw a cell phone case the same color as yours, and forget that I bought milk yesterday and end up getting more today.

Today I love fresh strawberries in the oatmeal. I love that the weather has cooled down for a moment. I love when taxis drive by slowly like they are looking for stray fares here in the suburbs, what even are they doing? I love dogs who walk their people every day. I love children who believe the world is a place of wonder and I hope they never grow up to realize that it isn’t, because that would make me have to rethink my own belief, for I love this world of wonder.

Today I love slowly sipping coffee on the front verandah and admiring the colors of the front garden.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
