Today I love 57th family reunions, because, how often does that ever happen, right? I love that when I am at my family reunion I often see people who are long gone out of the corner of my eye and when I turn to see them I see that it is the next generation only, standing around, but looking so much like they belong to this family that my eyes took pieces of their countenance and assembled from them those we miss so much. I love that in a very real way it actually is the missing ones come to say hello and smile with pride at our gathering together again in honor of our name. I love my wonderfully inclusive family and I love that they love me back. I love that we still meet in the same place that we have done for all these years with only a few exceptions. I love that I have only missed the reunion once that I can remember and that memory is getting foggy and may soon be gone. I love that although times and activities have changed the family reunion has never been less than what it was intended and though there is no one with our family name any more and only one who was born with that name we will never, ever be anything other than McKinlays on the third Sunday of July … except next year when we will not be anything but McKinlays on the second Sunday, July the 12th, because the place we meet in was already rented on the 19th.
Today I love that we are returned to the cottage for the last day of our weekend and even though I am back at work there is a definite cottage weekend feel to this day and I will take that. I love that breakfast is will be on shortly and then there is the intention of kayaking in between jobs here. I love that there is a whole mess of stuff to do before we head home for the week though home isn’t far enough away that I couldn’t slip back here to take care of any leftover things that might need more time than we have, and I love that having to return to the cottage through the week would certainly not be the worst thing that could happen to me.
Today I love breakfast on the deck. I love the sweet smell of the air when the sun warms the cedars and the pine and spruce trees around here. I love that we find thngs to wonder at almost every day.
Today I love drinking my coffee on the deck with my breakfast after I’ve done some writing.
