Today I Love This lovely Fireplace

Today I love this lovely fireplace that is working again. I love that it has been over two decades that I’ve spent with gas fireplaces in my home and cottage and I am cheerfully attached to them. I love their happy flickering warmth and their steady flow of heat. I love that our fireplace was not working well yesterday, but today it has been working like a trooper and all because of a service call and a cleaning. I love that it draws us near with that primitive allure that man has always experienced with fire. I love sitting in front of the fireplace with a hot drink on a cold day or night and reading or writing or just contemplating life and all its subtle nuances. I love that, although there is no crackle or roar, the fireplace reminds me of the wood burning stoves of my youth and childhood and I always loved the feeling of being near the stove. I love that the fireplace has the convenience of a switch, even though I did love lighting the wood stove and splitting wood for it when I was a boy. I love that the tradition of a fire on the hearth is still alive, even if it is under the stern control of a thermostat in these modern times.

Today I love getting ahead of the game when it comes to working. I love that I can often work ahead on some projects and the feeling of being done is a wonderful one. I love that this is how our radio show is produced, written and recorded in advance. I love that I often pretend in my show scripts that I’m in the radio station studio and broadcasting live by saying I hear the weather person in the hallway or something like that, and though I’m the only one laughing I still find it funny.

Today I love that I was dubbed the oatmeal wizard here in our house because I’ve figured out a way to make the bulk store steel cut oats taste almost identical to the brand name steel cut oats that come with a picture of a Quaker on the packaging. I love that this process was decreed to be oatmeal alchemy by the other half of my household and that she is impressed with my porridge magic and that is a great and wonderful thing.

Today I love drinking coffee and contemplating oatmeal here in front of the perfectly functioning fireplace.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
