Today I love recipe jokes, like when I tell my friend Jim that he shouldn’t be using vegan cheese because I’m pretty sure that it’s illegal to make cheese out of vegans.
I love reminding people that there is absolutely no shepherd in shepherds pie, and that Girl Guide Cookies, despite their name, contain very little real girl guide.
I love that when I once copied a recipe out for a friend’s father, that right after the line, “bring to a boil,” I added ” … it doesn’t say whose boil to bring it to and that seems kind of gross, so I’d skip that and just cook it really good.”
I love that cooking is an activity that both demands and leaves room for laughter.
I love that food that is cooked with joy and laughter almost always tastes of those ingredients.
I love food adventures, especially ones that involve exotic food. I love that I am sometimes reminded that the food I grew up with is exotic to other people. I love that I had a good breakfast today, am full, but am still thinking of food. I love that adventures usually mean leaving your comfort zone and that is true of eating as well; comfort food is delicious and wonderful but stepping away from those dishes is how the adventures are to be found.
Today I love that we have plans to make the house even more organized.
I love that I get to make stuff, ’cause I love to make stuff even when I’m making the same thing over and over again.
I love that if there is an end to repetition in sight then repetition doesn’t bother me too much.
I love when there is a plan and there is a desired result but the journey is up to me.
I love when I can figure out ways to modify things so that they work better.
I love that there will be some joy in the new way the house is organized, and I love that mostly we are looking at sorting our combined library so that we can share it with each other.
Today I love that the Christmas tree is gone from inside the house and the evidence of it is almost completely vacuumed up, though I’m sure there will be the odd pine needle showing up for a few months to come. I love that there is a giant empty corner in the great room, and I’m just letting that empty space affect me in its way for a while before we start moving things into there.
Today I love slurping coffee quietly while I absorb the aura of an empty corner.
