Today I Love Surviving Physical Stress Tests

coffee on the drive beside the snow bank
I’m in it deep!

Today I love surviving physical stress tests and coming home to dig out the driveway. Hey, hospital, you think your treadmill is a stress test, come see my driveway, will ya! Ha ha. I love that I get healthcare paid for by my insurance. I love that my insurance never declines after the fact, that I’m always told in advance whether there will be a charge. I love that my insurance premium payment is that I have to continue to be a Canadian citizen, because I LOVE BEING A CANADIAN! I love that there is lots of snow around here for me to blow. I love sending arcs of snow up through the air and stacking piles of snow on banks and I have loved the way that works since I was a child with a shovel dreaming of what it would be like to own a real snowblower some day. I love that even though I may be late finishing up with my outdoor work today because I had no idea my stress test was going to take so long, I will still finish it all. I love that it is so cold out  that the air in my lungs feels like it is scraping them clean. I love that I am that crazy guy who drives around in the freezing cold with the heat off and the windows down in the truck so that the windshield doesn’t frost up on me and I don’t get overheated between jobs.

Today I love that so many people are getting where they need to be today because we are winter warriors and being determined and acting responsibly is the only way you win this game called winter in Canada. I love that every year the weather tests me and every year I pass. I love that this is a pretty good winter as winters go. I love that I can still see winter the way it was when I was young and everyone took it as normal that it was going to snow and we were going to make do and get through … and we did. I love that sometimes it’s all I can do to keep from laughing at the idea that winter was a surprise.

Today I love roasted dinners. I love hard work. I love when respecting someone comes easy because they deserve it. I love people who do there job as if they owe themselves the feeling of accomplishment. I love raspberries and orange pieces in my oatmeal. I love oatmeal a whole lot. I love crumpets and honey and I’m going to have me some of that real soon.

Today I love drinking coffee while I contemplate the feeling of accomplishment that clearing driveways gives me.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
