Today I Love Cool Cottage Weekends

Home made breakfast

Today I love cool cottage weekends. I love that we’ve been out in the kayaks already this morning and the waves are fetching through the keyholes between the islands and when you get in the path of the fetch there are rollers that lift you up a meter or more and then set you down into the face of the next wave and my Dagger kayak loves to splash through those. I love that coming back with the wind took us half the time that going out into it took. I love that those waves coming between the cape and Hay Island and Whitecloud Island are fetching all the way from the Bustard Islands likely and they’ve got nothing better to do than gain strength and show off. I love that we got out and in before the rollers turned to white capped combers which seems to be happening now, though they aren’t huge yet, still just a fair size and strong. I love that this summer was good and that I was here and present for it, though it still isn’t like it was when I was a child, I think I need summer vacation again, maybe I should go back to school.

Today I love that on the cottage table there is a grocery list for the grocery store in the small town near the cottage, and that on that list is doughnuts and that the grocery store in question makes the best in store bakery doughnuts and that we are going to get some of those in a short time. I love that I will be spending some of my Sunday writing and some of it doing some graphics and some of it cooking and some of it reading and maybe even some of it watching a movie. I love that the word “movie” is a shortening of the phrase “moving pictures” that was coined from the fact that films were originally a sequence of still images being displayed so quickly that the optical part of the brain doesn’t see the still pictures so much as it sees the changes from one to another. The inability of the brain to isolate individual images that are being shown at a rate of sixteen every second is called persistence of vision, and I love that we have exploited what could have been considered a cognitive inability.

Today I love people knitting and crocheting. I love babies who stare at me with no expression on their faces except curiosity. I love homemade breakfast that I helped make. I love crab apple jam and apricot jam too. I love ideas popping in my head like bubbles from an aquarium aerator. I love my effervescent brain.

Today I love coffee with homemade breakfast that I helped to make.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
