Today I love the Eugenia Power Dragon Boat Team of the Grey Bruce Dragon Boat Club. I love that they welcomed three of us from the Owen Sound Póg Mo Thóin team with open arms at the Hamilton Regatta yesterday. I love the determination they showed when we went head to head against a large group of dragon boat teams from all over the area. I love that we have a higher average age than many of the other teams but we still beat some of them (we came in second in at least two heats). I love that I got to steer three races, I love the view from the back of the boat when the whole team is surging in sync and boats full of millennials are struggling to keep up with us. HA! I love that I was able to keep on course as well as I did, and that the only time we lost our lane we were so far ahead of the team that owned the lane we encroached on that no interference was called. I love the feel of the steering deck of a dragon boat under my feet, but I love the feel of our own dragon boat back in Owen Sound Bay the best and I’ll be happy to be back on board that sturdy dragon on Tuesday night. I love that though we didn’t win anything, we won our own day for ourselves by getting out there and conquering new water.
Today I love relaxing at the cottage and nursing our aches and pains after a steady week of work and a hard Saturday of driving and paddling and steering (harder work than you might think) and then driving again. I love that I restrained myself from buying a dragon boat paddle yet again, though I feel like the strength required for that restraint is gradually weakening. I love that I know myself so well.
Today I love adventurous breakfast sandwiches at the cottage. I love that we attached the swim dock to the main dock and made a place to sit with chairs and coffee and sunsets, though we’ll likely move the swim dock out into the bay a couple dozen meters when the water gets warmer. I love that the water is warmer than it was last weekend and if the wind dies down we’ll probably be going in swimming again this weekend, maybe today. I love swimming.
Today I love drinking coffee on the deck and writing while I quietly wait for the wind to die down enough to go swimming.
