Today I love gardening even though I’m not keen on the actual work since much of it has to do with being bent over and my body doesn’t do that as well as it used to, but the idea of planting plants and having them grow food that we then get to consume is an absolutely wondrous thing to get to do. I love working in the garden despite the pain it brings because it reminds me of gardening with my mother and my grandmother and grandfather back when I was a child. I see memories of my dad plowing our huge garden with a single furrow plow and a harnessed horse, not because we didn’t have a tractor and plow but because we did have a harness broke horse and it compacted the soil a lot less. I love the memories of that huge plot that was bigger than our house lot is here, and filled with so many things that we don’t have room to grow. I love that back then we were encouraged to choose things to plant and grow and as a result we ended up with popcorn that grew naturally, and pumpkins, and ornamental gourds just because.I love that back then we would grow a half a row, probably twenty feet long, of tomatoes, and there would be so many tomatoes that we could just walk out into the garden and eat two or three of them right off the bush, warm from the sunshine. I love that so many of them would end up in preserves that we’d still be eating in the spring of the next year.
Today I love that it is Saturday and we were at the market where we bought tomato plants among all the other things we acquire regularly, and they are already planted right beside the parsley that we bought last week. I love that we have more chives than we could ever manage to eat growing all over the place like weeds but not quite prolific enough to choke out all the darned weeds.
Today I love that Saturday breakfast and lunch come from the market these days and Syrian food for lunch seems to have become our new habit. I love how good our lives seem to be these days, how comforting this routine is. I love that I have rounded up a dozen wonderful musical acts for the show I’m hosting on our local Rogers cable network.
Today I love drinking coffee while I wander around the garden, watching and listening to the plants grow.
