Today I Love Democracy

Today I love democracy and the fact that every person of voting age, whether they are a student or the head of an international corporation, a crossing guard or the mayor of a major metropolis, a musician or an entertainment industry mogul all have the same quiet yet powerful voice at the polls. I love that this coming provincial election here in Ontario will be my first one where I will actually be working for Elections Ontario. I love that today is my training day and I’m learning a lot. I love that I will be working hard on election day. I love that I will likely write my TIL post  the day before the election because I don’t want to miss posting but I don’t want to take time away from my job so writing what I’m pretty sure I’ll be loving and what I already know I love beforehand seems like the best solution. I love my community, my province and my country and I love being part of how it works. I love that I get to do this. I love that my mother was so determined that we all understand the importance of voting, and I love that I am doing what she did before, helping to make the election mechanics run smoothly and fairly.

Today I love that in a pinch I can cook my lunch in less than five minutes. I love that my go to fast food is fried eggs and toast. I love that this day dawned so fresh and wonderfully welcoming at the cottage. I love that I got to enjoy that before rushing back to town to do my training. I love that I live so close to the training center that I can get home, cook, write, make coffee, brush my teeth and make it back to the training session on time … I hope. đŸ˜‰ I love that I’ll be going back to the cottage before the day is over.

Today I love squirt gun fights with laughing children. I love being the resident tickle monster. I love warm toast with butter and strawberry jam. I love things that remind me of where I came from, how wonderful life is, how far I’ve traveled, and where I intend to go. I love beautiful days of summery weather. I love the green of the trees. I love the laughing little creek when I suddenly hear it chattering away, reminding me that it doesn’t care about any of the things that I might think are bad or stressful.

Today I love drinking coffee so much that I’m making myself a cup to go before I head back for more training. Exercise your franchise, people, every chance you get.

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
