Today I love the warming weather as the earth makes an effort to ease off on the polar chill that we’ve been experiencing. I love the goings and goings of natural aspects of my world, like the pans of ice that are suddenly drifting eastward out of our bay to the bigger, chilly Georgian Bay waters. I love that although ducks clearly can fly, they often appear to be less convinced of that fact and I laugh sometimes when I see them beating the air wildly as if staying aloft can only be accomplished by shear will and frenzied flapping. I love the flitting of small birds from tree to bush to fence to wire. I love how still and puffed up they sit in the extreme cold, sheltered from the storm in the hollow of a cedar and taking up more than twice their usual space in an effort to make their natural down coats keep them warm. I love the way nature accommodates for so many contingencies. I love the beautiful sunsets that I often get to see this time of year and I love the sensation of the days getting longer, I swear I can feel them stretching out, flexing a little more each day, pushing back the darkness and making the effort to help warm up this cold and icy landscape that has come to purge my home of all the dust and grime of the working season of fall. I love how everything has a purpose and maybe I have one too.
Today I love how many things are worth looking up into the sky for. I love that we are sending so many things into space this year, unmanned missions to Mars, satellites, probes to points of interest, people to the ISS and tourists heading out to loop around the moon. I love that so many things are coming to us from space this year, meteor showers, information from unmanned probes and people returning from the moon loop. I love that we found a telescope and we’re hoping to set it up to see some of these things from the darkness of our chalet’s back yard.
Today I love perfectly cooked eggs and that someday I hope to get them just right. I love when my hair is freshly braided and feels neat and tidy. I love that in June I’ll be getting my head shaved and starting the whole process of growing my hair over again. I love that my hair is long enough to be used to make wigs for people who are suffering hair loss due to cancer treatment. I love that it’s my way of saying “F*CK CANCER!” I love every warrior who has ever fought cancer and won and every one of them who has fought cancer and lost because as long as it exists, the fight must go on.
Today I love sipping hot coffee while the ice drifts east past the shore where the ducks are still trying to convince themselves that they really can fly.
