Prior to TMS Treatment, Robert Doubts it Will Work For Him
Robert Rodger never looked at his reflection in the mirror and thought something positive about himself. He always thought something negative. He was so steeped in depression that he was unable to work, and was completely supported by family. With no money, Robert was also unable to have or do most of the things in life that he always wanted.
When TMS first came to his attention, Robert had a difficult time believing that it would work for him. But he took time and studied up on things such as; questions about TMS treatment itself, Neuronetics, Inc., the company that provided the equipment, and many of the clinical studies of TMS Treatment, especially the outcomes for treatment-resistant patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Robert saw that the clinical studies and statistics were overwhelmingly in favor of successful outcomes, as was the anecdotal evidence in the press.
But even after considering all of that, “I couldn’t believe that anything was going to work for me.” Robert firmly believed that “I would be in that small percentage for whom it wouldn’t.”
TMS Treatment Meant ‘Change’
“Initially I dismissed TMS,” said Robert. “It was my Therapist who pointed out that if I wanted to make a change, I had to do something different.” So he was able to begin looking at it from another perspective. He came to understand that “this was a real change that I could make.”
While Robert recognized that such a change would very likely result in a great outcome, he also realized that he was actually harboring quite a strong fear of change. So he talked with his therapist and work through his fear of change. Even though he still doubted that it would work for him, Robert had the revelation that “I knew that was the depression speaking. That was the disease itself.” And so luckily, Robert to go through with the TMS Treatment.
Others Notice Robert Change
“My parents said they noticed a change in me that first week. The woman who was administering the treatment noticed a change the second week.”
But it took Robert quite a while longer to admit that the Therapy was working, and that he felt different. He speaks of being deeply invested in his depression. But now, looking back, Robert sees it all pretty clearly.
“If I could go back and talk to my depressed self, I think that all I’d really say is, ‘Don’t wait. Don’t hem, don’t haw, don’t waste those months.’” Robert sits peacefully as he thinks about his experience.
His advice to others? “Just do it. Just make that change.”
