A Story of Lost Love and a Broken Heart
We were sitting in a booth, sipping on traditional Sweet Tea and waiting for our meals to arrive. It was a quick lunch with one of my Associates, and she was telling me the story of her first broken heart. Not her first love, but her first heartbreak after losing a love.
She had fallen head-over-heals for a man she adored. He was fun – definitely one of those larger-than-life personalities. Whenever she was around him, she felt better about herself. She loosened up, worried less, and she started to become more fun, too.
Then, out of the clear blue sky, BOOM! Dropped – without a clue, without any warning at all. She felt like she couldn’t breathe and slid into a heavy dark depression. Every morning when she awoke, the 100 pound blanket of grief was right there, too. At times it seemed too heavy to bear.
But, being the survivor that she was – and still is – she devised a life raft for herself. She wrote down a list of inspiring quotes that she read and added to every day. She kept them with her everywhere she went. When that powerful voice in her head told her she wasn’t ‘enough’, she pulled out that list and replaced her dark thoughts with hopeful thoughts. By doing that, she claimed power over the darkness – over that voice that wasn’t being loving.
It took a full two years before she really felt like herself again, but she finally got there. And she realized that now she carried those quotes in her head, no longer needing the list.
I’ve never forgotten her story. Although I am sorry for her struggle, it’s clear that she gained invaluable wisdom. She proved that even though her depression was powerful and overwhelming at times, by changing her thinking, she changed her life. And she learned that if she had loved herself that much, she may not have fallen so hard.
Perhaps one or more of these motivational quotes will resonate with you – for your mental health inspiration in 2016.
