The Last Few Weeks Of Summer (Stress?)

pineC.R. writes: Is it me, or does fall feel like it’s arriving earlier this year?

Although fall doesn’t technically begin until September 23 during the autumnal equinox, the last few weeks of August feel like a good-bye to all we love about summer: sun, long days, more time spent outdoors and overall, a more relaxed feeling.

The optimism of June and July seems to be replaced with that looming back-to-school feeling, and for people who observe Jewish tradition, a new beginning approaches with the Jewish New Year in mid-September.

There are so many things I want to do before my work schedule intensifies once more (not that I’m not busy at work, I’m just not frantic.) I haven’t yet gotten to Central Park this summer. It seems like such an insignificant event–taking the train from Brooklyn to the Upper East or West Side of Manhattan and spending time in one of my favorite parks in the world.

I’m behind on my other summer plans, too. I wanted to take a day off work and go to the ocean, also just a short train or car ride away. Visit a friend for a few days; she’s working for the summer in the Adirondacks on a farm and I looooovvvve farms. Even the smell. And so much more.

All the things I wanted to have done, but haven’t, are leaving me feeling incomplete. Even a bit anxious. Stressed. And it’s only August.

So I’ve decided I’m going to do my best to take at least 2 days a week to do walking meditation out-of-doors in the nearest park. I do hisbodedus, prayerful-meditation indoors or even walking on the city streets every day of the week, but it’s not the same as being close to green, leafy trees. Sigh.

Let’s see if I stick with it. And if anyone wants to call me on it, I’d appreciate it.
