How Denial Works in Sex Addiction

denial and dissociationDenial is a form of distorted thinking. In fact it is a masterpiece of distorted thinking. Breaking through denial marks the beginning of addiction treatment. This is just as true for sexual addiction and behavioral addictions generally as it is for chemical dependency.

Denial is one of our best coping mechanisms. It allows all humans to move forward in life in the face of crippling existential angst, and provides hope when there should be none. It is only denial that allows people to effectively compartmentalize their lives when there are many aspects operating against them that are beyond their control.

Let’s call a trowel a trowel, here. I think you only don’t like denial when it leads to a consequence that you oppose, like sexual behavior that you find destructive.

The denial was the the final piece for me. I finally had to leave because he was arrested and still felt his stuff was just “normal”. It is so heartbreaking! This addiction is very tough!

    Hi,
This “affliction” is indeed indescribably patient and stealthy. I am hopefully coming to terms with just how much…
I am praying and wishing that I can overcome its grip before the people I love are hurt.
    Not sure how this happened..?
I am trying to keep hope alive for them.

My husband of 7 years and boyfriend of 13 years , turned out to b a pervert sex addict ,he has been with countless women ,my friends , relatives , students etc the moment he gets to know that a woman is of promiscuous nature ,he starts following her ,young or old does not matter ,ugly beautiful does not matter. He calls them compulsively for years and always on hunt , caught many times but lied to my face , this time caught for good and seeking medical help and I am wondering what I am or was ,we practically had none or bad sex life
