    There are some good points to this article. As a recovering porn addict, I can tell you that it is true: If you are really an addict, then resistance is futile. “What I resist persists” has proven to be true time and again.

    What has worked for me in recovering from addictions is more complex. I have had several very damaging addictions over the course of my life, and there was no one method that helped me overcome all of them. A couple required 12-step recovery groups. But my porn/sex addiction did not seem to respond well to this method.

    To overcome smoking required a proactive approach that combined prescription medication, multiple doctor’s visits, and taking up anti-smoking activism and outreach. (It also took Hurricane Sandy knocking out the power at all the stores I used to buy my cigs from!)

    My recovering porn addiction has required a similar methodology. That’s why I created the QuitPorn Group Text Hotline; my recovery absolutely depends upon helping other porn addicts recover. I also utilize hypnotism and that seems to have helped noticeably.

    So, there’s not always a one-size-fits-all approach to every single addiction. Addictions are the same, but also different.

    Hello Dr. Linda,

    A very well explained article and very helpful.

    Two greatest tools/skills to overcome the urge/craving of sexual desires are;
    1) Will Power 2) Mindfulness

    Use your will power to accept the very much existence or occurrence of such urges and welcome them warmly and even make friends with them so you can live with them and not feel guilty upon their frequent arises.

    Mindfulness is used to work proactively upon urges to plan some predefined activities so at high times you are ready with a work plan and can consciously divert the energy produced through cravings in a productive activity in a positive manner.

    Thanks

    This is some really good information about recovering from sex addiction. My cousin’s husband is having trouble with this recently. So I liked that you pointed out that he should try a 12 step program.

    Linda
    This is the best article of subsiding porn urges I have read to date. However, this is very important to realize and figure out how to let that phase pass out. One person told me that I keep remembering God as much as I can until it subsides. Being an addict I have to yet figure it out.
