(Or, if you prefer, Happy First Day of the Rest of Your Life)!

In either case, why not make it an inspiring one?

Start this New Year, and each day in it, with affirming thoughts and words that activate amazing powers you have, from within, to refresh and literally restore balance in the neurochemistry of your brain and body, mind and heart!

It’s no longer theory, thanks to findings in neuroscience, we know the human brain and body are wired to have an intimate relationship with words. Words activate images and neurotransmitters, accordingly, and these molecules of emotion literally start or stop your behaviors.

That’s right. You and language are an inseparable duo! Why not make this unalterable reality a heaven sent partnership?

You have the power to activate optimal feel-good states of mind and body — and in turn, this energy can provide you with unstoppable energy to make the most of each day or to meet any challenges along the way, one moment and day at a time.

For balance, you need two types of affirmations. On the one hand, ones that provide a calming sense of contentment or acceptance of who you are, your life, where are, what you have at present; and on the other hand, ones that energize and inspire you to take action, never settle, rather keep reaching for (the stars!) an ever better version of yourself and life!

Think of this inside-out way of living your life as “your job,” a key means of breaking unhealthy dependency on external sources of happiness, i.e., foods, drugs, persons, etc., and instead, connecting to inner sources of comfort and wellbeing through the use of your capacities for possibility-thinking, creativity and imagination, grounded in acceptance and appreciation for where you are at present — all of which rely on the thoughts you think … and the words you speak.

You have the power, now go for it.

Start by connecting to your body with your breath in the moment, taking slow, deep, long breaths. With each breath, smile and stand or sit up as straight and tall as possible, allowing yourself to feel the boosts of positive energy you receive from affirming words and sentences … that begin the words “I am,” such as the ones below.

I AM …

(1) … Wired to yearn for and create happiness … and other optimal states of mind and body in and around me.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

(2) … Abundantly blessed in every way … all is well with my soul at any moment wherever I go, whatever I do.

“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”

(3) … Capable of handling all life challenges or loss with grace and dignity.

“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

(4) … A believer in the ever-present creative power of LOVE … an unstoppable drive wired into every human heart that is incomparably more powerful than fear (!) … guiding all to participate in realizing an ever better world community and legacy for our children.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

~ FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT, First Inaugural Address

(5) … A life-shaping being wired with a miracle-making imagination … that activates powerful emotion-energy, and is activated by my thoughts and words — and thus I set an intention to focus most my attention to being inspired by my highest vision for what I yearn and celebrate in myself and loved ones and life.

“Only that day dawns to which we are awake.”

(6) … A consciously loving and responsible choice maker … when it comes to protecting and thoughtfully caring for my mind, body and emotional well being (spirit).

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, for otherwise we shall not be able to trim the lamp of wisdom, and keep our mind strong and clear.”

(7) … Aware of and carefully exercise the power of who I yearn to be and what I want in and around my life … as a powerful creative force that shapes me and the direction of my life.

“Men [Women] do not attract what they want, but what they are…The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears.”

(8) … A seeker of wisdom and understanding of what works and doesn’t work to create health and happiness in life and relationships.

“Run my dear, from anything that may not strengthen your precious budding wings.”

(9) … Aware that all of life is a miracle, and choose to live knowing and seeing each person in my life as a miracle-making being.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

(10) … Grateful for all the blessings in my life, past and present, and also for the challenges, and how they’ve grown me to be an ever better version of myself.

“Cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment, of these, if you but remain true to them your world will at last be built.”

Affirmations like the ones above are always available, should you so desire at any moment, to take charge of the energies of your mind and body from within.

Use them often, as needed. Early morning, and right before bed are key times. Learn to apply them to problem areas of your life, for example, to break a dependency on certain foods or drinks (or other external ways of lowering stress/anxiety). Together, your breath and affirming words are powerful tools to directly calm and comfort your self, mind and body.

Additionally, use affirmations to refresh or counteract negative energy, for example, after a disagreement with a loved one or after watching fear-triggering TV shows, news, movies (you may wish to tune out fear-mongering news). Disallow negative energy from hoarding the space of your thoughts and imagination. It’s helpful to remain aware of the fact that all markets know (from decades of research) that fear sells; so identify and avoid, when possible, media and entertainment that is specifically designed to manipulate you emotionally to act, think, feel in their interest — but not yours!

Finally, speaking affirming words to yourself is an essential way to nourish key relationships. When you consciously shift to a good-feeling thought, you’re also sending a signal to your subconscious mind that consciously aware you — and not others or your body’s survival-system — is in charge of how you feel about your self and life at any given time. In this way, you choose to disallow another’s negative words, judgments or opinions to affect you in ways that may otherwise drain the positive energy from your body.

Learn to treasure your energy, and protect your positive momentum.

If you do not already, develop a practice this year, one day at a time, of shifting to affirming thoughts and notice how their amazing power to more easily realize your goals, dreams and aspirations.
