Last week’s cartoon was a list of quotes about the holidays for the cranky and slightly depressed.
For any cartoon you enjoy, you’re invited to share it anyplace except Pinterest. (Pinterest grabs the whole image, which is not cool. Facebook just uses thumbnails, which IS cool.) And thank you for sharing every week on Facebook and Twitter.
This weekend’s cartoon is about magical thinking that we all like to tickle our imaginations with: What would we do if we won the lottery?
I’m sure we all have a list a mile long. But what about taking care of ourselves, as boring as that might be? Would we still keep going to the dentist, or continuing therapy that we might have been exploring before the lottery ticket? Or would we be too happy, and not need therapy for a while?
A recent study in 2014 by the National Institute of Health says in general, both bodily health and mental health do improve in lottery winners. So go ahead! Buy that ticket!
However, it goes on to say that there can also be more “risky behaviors” that are negatively associated with health.
In this case, a higher income will have an ambiguous overall effect, by increasing smoking, drinking, calorie consumption, or other risky activities that are detrimental to general health.
(Now you can buy the whole cake!)
Personally, I think I’d continue therapy. I would like the advice in such a startling new situation. I would also buy a house with a pond, buy a nice piece of jewelry or two, and hire myself a cook. To make me that big beautiful cake.
How about you?
