The Straight Dope writes that the original yellow smiley faces were invented in 1963 by Harvey Ball, for State Mutual Insurance. I love this quip:
He made the thing yellow to give it a sunshiny look, and State Mutual, whom nobody would accuse of rashness, printed up 100.
Of course, this was only the start of the people’s wish to get happy, which continues today in that catchy, danceable song by Pharrell Williams, Happy .
The caption reads: I’d really like to take another look at Dr. Odett’s Happy Face Theory.
I’m sure there is a study like this going on right now, in some research center. I don’t think I’d be a good candidate, however.
