Treatment Methods For Schizoaffective Disorder

In my previous article I discussed what Schizoaffective Disorder was.  In this article, I will describe the different treatment methods for Schizoaffective Disorder.  They include: individual therapy, family oriented therapy, in addition to group work.


According to, the first treatment method for Schizoaffective Disorder is psychotherapy.  The usual type of psychotherapy used for Schizoaffective disorder, according to, is supportive, client-centered, non-directive psychotherapy.  Why is this the main type of therapy used for individuals with Schizoaffective Disorder?  According to, individuals with Schizoaffective Disorder need a “warm, positive, change-oriented environment.”  According to, this enables individuals with Schizoaffective Disorder to explore their own environment and feel stable and secure.  In addition to non-directive psychotherapy, according to, problem-solving therapy can also be used.  It develops problem-solving skills and daily coping skills.  This enables indivudals with Schizoaffective Disorder to develop daily fucntioning skills and social skills.  In addition, relationship skills can also be developed, pertaining to the patient’s family concerns.  Behavioral techniques can also be addressed, according

Psychotherapy-Family Oriented

In addition to psychotherapy on an individual basis, according, psychotherapy that is family oriented can also be implemented into the treatment plan for individuals with Schizoaffective Disorder.  This type of treatment consists of psychoeducational sessions for the family.

Psychotherapy-Group Work

In addition to psychotherapy that is based on individual work and family work, according to, psychotherapy that is based on group work can also be part of the treatment plan.  Group work is best done in inpatient settings as opposed to mixed outpatient group settings.  According to, group work consists of “daily-living problems, general relationship issues, and other specific areas.”  In addition to the mentioned skills developed during a group therapy session, according to, “occupational roles and future educational plans might occur. ”


To end this article, various treatment methods have been mentioned for Schizoaffective Disorder.  According to, they include individual therapy.  Individual psychotherapy may include non-directive therapy, in addition to problem-solving therapy.  In addition to individual therapy, according to, another type of therapy used to treat Schizoaffective Disorder is family oriented therapy.  This type of therapy consists of psychoeducation.  According to, group work in an inpatient unit is the final type of therapy used to treat patients with Schizoaffective Disorder.  According to, group therapy in an inpatient setting is more highly recognized in contrast to mixed group therapy in an outpatient setting.
