Are You a Rescuer?

IMG_0861One of the common Giveaway Girl traits is rescuing. Author Melody Beattie lists a number of ways in which we try to rescue those around us:

  • Doing something we really don’t want to do
  • Saying yes when we mean no
  • Doing something for others even though those individuals are capable and should do it on their own
  • Meeting people’sneeds without being asked and before we’ve agreed to do so
  • Doing more than our fair share of work after our help is requested
  • Consistently giving more than we get back in a particular situation
  • Thinking and/or speaking for others
  • Suffering consequences for others

Does this sound like you?

Guilty as charged, but working to change this. I can’t rescue everyone.

Thumbs up, Pamster. I like how you said “working to change this”. It is a process, not something that happens overnight.

The good news is that you want to change this. A lot of women tend to get such pleasure from the martyrdom that we think no change is necessary. But this harms everyone!

Tell us what you are doing to make changes. What made you decide to start?

It’s actually simple, yet hard. I now say NO to that little voice in my head. I got tired of the ingratitude. Not even a thank you.

      Pamster,
Sounds like you found a boundary that works well for you. Wonderful.
