    Yes, indeed. Only saying ‘I did my best’ as an excusse for abuse or another failure won’t do.
    One could say; ‘I did my best given the (lack of) knowlegde I had, the circumstances I was in, the way I felt and thought back then. I know now I was wrong treating you that way and I’m very sorry I did this to you. Is there a way I can repair (some of) the damage I did to you?’.

    Ofcourse from Narcissists and other Cluster B-people you’ll never hear the second version. It stops with; ‘I did my best’, and than the attack starts telling you you caused their abusive behavior or their failure in the first place. Turning themselves into the victim of you.
    Absolutely impossible to deal with.

    Can you suggest a response to someone who uses this excuse or any variation of it? Thank you!

    Yes, would love to hear the alternative to that. We are human and make mistakes. Own the mistake and aplogize. What else is there to say. I dont agree with you, what bugs me is when parents dont even acknowledge the errors of the way.

    Alleging that ‘one did one’s best’ is feeble;

    one did ‘the best they were willing to do.’

    These statements are not interchangeable.
