Ms. Bernard, what’s your take on therapy for older adults whose brains are starting to show the wear of the years? My dad, who has short term memory loss due to TBI, is losing some of the censoring “skills” he learned and is now starting to voice his regrets, pervasive sadness and confusion about his life. I think he would benefit from talking to a therapist instead of dumping these feelings on strangers and acquaintances, but the rest of our family resists this idea because Dad might be “upset” (hint: he’s already upset!) Do you have any experience with patients like this? Thanks.

      Hi Gregor,
I am sorry to hear that your dad is going through a hard time. It can be very scary and disheartening to see your parent lose their memory and begin to change. I think you are absolutely right when you say that your dad may benefit from talking to a therapist rather than “dump” his feelings to family members and strangers – it would make things easier for you as well to have him develop a relationship with a professional he trusts and can rely on. Because of the TBI and the short-term memory loss, he may need someone, who specializes in geriatric counseling and who can meet with him two to three times a week. Depending on your dad’s mobility, it may not be a bad idea to have someone, who would also do home visits instead of having someone drive your dad to their office. I hope this helps but if you have any other thoughts or questions, please, let me know.
