How Music Can Improve Your Mood

Like many people, music is a huge passion of mine. I love writing and listening to music as both a creative outlet and for entertainment. I listen to music to lift my mood when I’m down, and to brighten an already radiant day.

When we connect with music it has an impact on our emotions, and is an activity where we can connect with others, revive our energy, and experience greater joy.

Think of how ubiquitous music is in the world. We play music during celebrations; it sets the stage by accompanying movies, commercials, and any entertaining event. We listen to it for motivation, comfort, to relieve stress, and as an outlet to release emotions.

It’s pretty clear that music plays an important role in many people’s lives.

Research isn’t totally clear about how people emotionally respond to music, but there is some research that shows people intentionally listen to music to regulate their mood, and that positive emotions tend to be a dominant response.

More often than not when we listen to music that we enjoy, it provides an increase in positive emotions and feelings, such as contentment, happiness, and interest.

How does music play a role in your life?

  1. Herb Ernst’s “Angels in Ecstasy” “Bringers of the Dawn”—the most exquisite music I have ever heard.

    Dancer, singer, etc.

  2. Have you ever done any research into the effects of really repitious music? Why do so many radio stations and even video games and movies play the same song list? Not only terminally boring it, really drives you nuts when your in an area where you can only get limited reception. Got to be some connection for conspiracy theorist to work on here! It can’t be just about the money it is some sort of PLOT but what. There has been a lot of good music out there that just isn’t getting played–and why sooo much of the same old crap-even if I like it gets OOwwllddd after several years.

  3. Music has been a great form of free therapy for me along with dance. It just does something amazing for the soul!!!

  4. Music is the vernacular of the human soul. ~Geoffrey Latham obtained from

  5. Music can have a very powerful influence on mood.

With some clients, I’ve suggested they make a personal playlist, starting with songs that capture their “down” or “negative” mood, and gradually leading themselves “up” to more positive feelings and thoughts.

It really works, for those with an affinity to music.

  6. that was an amazing topic to write about and i feel as music also helps you live without music what would the world be like i wonder? you see were like birds and music is our wings without wings we cant soar threw the breeze of life, laughter and love we will not feel the emotions that we feel today. Everyone in the world has at least hummed or heard a song today that itself had an impact on that individual. without music how do we live? simple…we don’t.

  10. Oh yes, music helps me a lot also. I feel that my spirits get lifted when I hear the music I want. There was a “golden” time when I was able to download music from the computer to a disk. I still wish that I would be able to do that. Unfortunately, I had recorded a lot of music on a batch of disks someone gave me, and it went bad. I think that downloading free music into a disk has gone by the wayside now.

But still, I had a lot of great music saved up and so nice to hear music that means a lot to me, and it’s not the everyday stuff.

I very much agree with Colin Dennis about radio stations playing the same old music. On the oldies station that I listen to, they play the same old music that I got sick of when it was out back then.

  11. I am living because of music and music has also changed my out look on life in every way possible for the better. not to mention it makes me want to learn.
