Inhale for the duration of the pose??? Sounds like the instructor was making things up without knowing what he/she was exactly doing. Yoga breath work (“pranayama”) is an advanced practice for students who have been practicing the poses for many months or even years. Without that strong foundation (and a teacher who understands the techniques and really knows how to instruct them) practicing the breath work can be counterproductive — or even worse, as you have discovered. Because it is so subtle and challenging the breath work needs to be done lying down, or for advanced students, in a comfortable seated resting position. Stick with just the poses (asanas) if the breath work is making you agitated, and find a teacher who understands the subtleties of breath work before you venture back into that realm.
