    Hard to leave childhood conditioning behind: my Dad always used to tell me, ‘if you think the answer will be no, don’t ask me’. After a while I just stopped asking rather than risk the wrath of don’t bother me. As an adult, adopted the philosophy of better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

      I know exactly what you mean ,having experienced similar stuff from my mother.
      But now, as a senior, the very 1st thing to go through my mind was this :”Since he’d say no to her & seemed to have taken pleasure in it,she might as well have gone ahead & done it!”
      Why did parents do this instead of sitting down & discussing why it was /was not a good idea to do whatever it was,thus teaching how to make reasonable decisions?
