How a Simple Mindset Shift Can Make or Break Your Daily Mood

A client of mine recently complained that his business was a drag. He no longer enjoyed working his vending machine route, and was planning to launch a Feng Shui consulting business.

His new venture was still young, so he had to rely on the vending machines for income for at least another couple of years.

“It’s such a drag, running around the valley, filling up vending machines and dealing with the hassle of ordering supplies. I can’t wait to be able to live off my new business. I love it! But I don’t have the time for it that I’d like.” He was feeling discouraged and frustrated.

When I asked him if he’d ever enjoyed his vending machine business, he replied, “Oh, yes. I used to really like it. I had freedom, enjoyed being outside, mixing it up with people. And you know, I was successful and proud of that.”

A little more conversation revealed that one day after he’d been passionate about Feng Shui for some time and had gotten his first paid consultation, he experienced a subtle yet powerful mindset shift. He “decided” he had a new purpose in life and that the vending machine business was “wrong for him.”

There it is.

The mindset shift barely occurred to him. He didn’t announce the shift to anyone as if it had been a breakthrough. He just began seeing things differently. This is what I’d call an unconscious mindset shift. As a result, every day spent working his vending business became a day of doing the wrong thing. It became a hassle. The right thing, his new Feng Shui business, seemed like Nirvana by comparison.

When this man saw the mindset shift for what it was, we questioned whether it was necessary to see his current business as wrong for him. After all, he had always enjoyed it and he was successful. Without it, he wouldn’t be able to launch his new venture.

Could he shift his mindset again? At that point, a new mindset shift had already occurred. He decided he would enjoy his current business while building the new one.

Have you experienced similar mindset shifts? These subtle yet powerful mental filters determine how we feel and respond to the world. And they shift so casually. Often they can be undone just as casually, but we must see them before having such a choice.
