Why Embracing Change is Good For You

Ironically, it’s one of the few truths in life we can count on to be, well, unchanging. Many of us find it challenging to accept change, particularly when it is (seemingly) forced upon us, such as in the case of a job loss or the end of a relationship.

Others resist even the smallest of changes, and strive at all times to stay within safe routines and comfort zones.

Let’s face it: change can be scary and uncomfortable. But what if change is not our enemy?

Here are seven reasons why embracing transformation and making friends with change is good for us:

It helps us grow

Change, even the painful kind – or perhaps especially that kind – is a superb teacher. Most of us can look back on some of our most challenging experiences involving change, and reflect on what we have learned and how much stronger we’ve become as a result.

We are pushed out of our comfort zone

Let’s face it. Some of us need a little shove to step outside of our comfort zones. Even when we know a new direction or risk will be good for us to take, we cling stubbornly to the old, safe, and familiar. These are the times when change will seem thrust upon us, but is actually just being a good friend and kicking our butts into a new gear.

We find out what we’re really made of

When we are faced with the unknown, and must rise to the challenge of surmounting new obstacles, strengths and talents we never knew we had are revealed.

It makes us more flexible and adaptable

Each time we rise to a challenge and adjust successfully to a change, we learn new behaviors and skills that serve us well in the future. As we gain valuable experience and begin to view change without fear, we can face – and embrace – everything that life brings us.

We get to experience more (and even have more fun!)

Once we accept that change is not just inevitable but actually good for us, we can dive more fully and fearlessly into life and all of it’s rich and varied experiences. We no longer shy away from new experiences out of resistance to change.

It gives us a fresh perspective

Experiencing something for the first time allows us to shift our perspective to that of the beginner’s mind. It invites a childlike curiosity and wonder. We may suddenly see things in an entirely different light, and experience insights into ourselves and the world that we would never have had access to before the change occurred.

It teaches us humility, vulnerability and gratitude

Change often serves to remind us that we don’t know all the answers, that we will make mistakes and still come out ok. We learn to be grateful for those things in our lives that remain constant and nourishing in the face of change, such as good friends or family. When we finally learn to embrace and relax into change instead of stiffening and resisting, we are vulnerable and open to the many rewards life brings us.

The more we are able to let go of resistance and welcome change for the liberation and growth it provides us, the richer, sweeter and more joyful our lives will become.
