Many people who work from home have a hard time staying focused on the task at hand, due to the many distractions that present themselves, which is completely understandable. Staying concentrated when there are others around you who are relaxing, playing (if you have kids), or watching TV can be near impossible at times.
Studies are now showing that if you surround yourself with others who are focused and working hard, it will promote concentration within your own mind, allowing for optimal productivity.
Published in journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, the study placed several people next to each other, all working on different tasks, varying in difficulty.
“The study’s authors write:
“In the current study, we showed for the first time that the exertion of mental effort is contagious. Simply performing a task next to a person who exerts a lot of effort in a task will make you do the same. It could be that this does not reflect a truly deliberate decision, but instead a more automatic tendency to imitate people, as is the case with yawning, rubbing your face, or shaking your foot, and facial expressions,” says an article on the matter, titled “How To Concentrate Automatically Without Even Trying” published by PsyBlog.
So if you find yourself unable to concentrate at home, perhaps try going to the library to focus. Others will be there either reading or working in a much needed, quiet space. Your motivation to work hard just may rub off on someone else, too!
