The Top Three Nutritional Supplements for Chronic Stress

fearThere are many sources that list their ‘top three’ supplements for chronic stress, but I chose these because of their integrated health benefits to the body so that they deal with root cause of stress.

According to the American Psychological Association, 75% of Americans have moderate to high stress. The American Institute of Stress also reports that about 80% of people in the U.S experience stress on the job.

Nutrition plays a critical role in stress management. The top three nutritional supplements, chosen for the reasons mentioned above, are briefly discussed below.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids or Fish Oil

Fish oil has a wide positive effect on the body. One of the causes of stress is an imbalance in your omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. When you take fish oil, balance is more readily achieved and the functions of glucocorticoid hormones are by extension supported.

The main hormone in this group is cortisol and its balance is important in stress management. Whenever possible, go for molecularly distilled fish oil sourced from the deep sea, because contamination with heavy metals is lower. Burp-free fish oil pills are nice, too.

Melatonin

Melatonin nutritional supplements are great in counteracting one of the major effects of chronic stress – poor quality sleep. Melatonin helps the body maintain a healthy circadian cycle which means low levels of cortisol at night. This promotes good and restful sleep which results in better productivity during the day.

Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant that further reduces the effect of chronic fatigue by mopping up excess circulating free radicals.

Vitamin B-complex

The right B-complex vitamins support many body processes, such as cardiovascular and brain health. These result in a person enjoying a reduction in toxic metabolic substances such as homocysteine. Other benefits that lead to lower stress levels are improved mood and positive outlook on life as well as increased levels of energy.

There are many causes of stress and just as many nutritional supplements that work together for overall well-being. The top three nutritional supplements for chronic stress discussed here are part of a holistic approach to chronic stress management, which includes avoiding the mental habits that cause stress.
