This is me every time I visit my parents as an adult. My mother has always made cutting remarks about what she views as failings in my life, but because she laughs after saying it it’s supposed to be a joke and because she says “I love you” later I don’t get to be indignant. I don’t know if she’s definitely a narcissist though; is that something that a non-therapist would be able to determine? Is it a behavior associated with other causes?

I truly feel sorry for children and young people who don’t know what narcissism is and are victim to it from their parents. My father was a raging narcissist who I removed from my “sphere” a long time ago, and he never got a clue. It is the only way he knows how to behave. Among much of the other gross narcissistic behavior I suffered, I was a victim to endless teasing. As an emotional child, I took offense and was told repeatedly “We’re TEASING you, Patty,” in a singsong tone like “what’s wrong with you that you can’t deal with it?”

“Teasing” is a cheap and lousy excuse for what was nothing less than thinly veiled nastiness, but it never ever stopped. Because by all means, if you’re upsetting your child, keep doing it! Unfortunately, I can see from listening to others that our narcissists are ghosts who will never stop haunting us, even long after they’re gone. And silly me, even though I understand his narcissism is something he could never change, I still feel regret for the tragedy that was our relationship.
