Excellent article which raises a lot of important issues. My son was taking various meds (SSRI, atypical antipsychotic, and more) for severe OCD, and when his depression grew I brought up the question of the drugs possibly playing a part. His psychiatrist told me in no uncertain terms that he needed the drugs and his problems were not stemming from them. Long story short….he had suicidal thoughts and ended up in an acute care facility. It was not until I insisted he be weaned off all the drugs did my son “reappear.” His OCD is mild now and he has been off all meds for over three years. We must all advocate for ourselves and our children.

Thanks for sharing your son’s experience, Janet. I’m very glad to hear that he is doing well, with mild symptoms and no longer has to take meds. I hope he continues to do well.
