I think you are spot on. As a psychologist I see the benefit medication can make in a person’s life. The quicker it can be used and stopped the better it is when this option is possible. Medication along with person to person psychological intervention is key and too often not also prescribed by the dr. giving the script for the meds. As the courtcase suggests, there are many advantages offered to the prescribing dr. by the pharmaceutical company. Prescribing docs need to keep ethics in mind and the patient’s best interest in view at all times. Fortunately most do.
Thanks for bringing this case to our attention.

I have my degree in pharmacology, worked 6 years doing research, switched to a sales position in a recruiting firm for 3 years and have since worked in the financial sector (retirement). I also did my half my masters in psychology before leaving and am a student of mindfulness. Oh and 3 of my first degree relatives are pharma and medical device sales reps.

In my experience and on a very over-simplified level, you can’t fight money. As a consumer, we can only change the way we value products. Mindfulness is a great path to this type of change.

Fully agree. Meds can be useful, but way over-prescribed by many docs. In Malaysia, most psychiatrists are see a new patient for just 5-10 minutes, prescribes the med and schedule for follow-ups. No psychological interventions. It’s criminal.
