    That’s a wonderful post. Greatly illustrates one of the basic reasons why we must pull back when a mental event is happening and observe it rather than merge into it and accept feelings as the truth.

    And I love your name, just like the prophet.

    This is an important post as we all have, at times,got bogged down in negative thoughts. You offer a valuable insight–we can change our thoughts, and in effect, change our reality. Thank you!

    Understanding our relationship to the contents of our mind -our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, memories and perceptions is perhaps the single most important factor that determines whether we have mental well-being or perpetual suffering.
    Most of the time we blindly identify with these mental objects. Then we become enslaved by them and suffer. Learning to see them as not ‘I’, but simply objects that arise in ‘I’ changes everything. Now we introduce a space around the object, the contents of mind, and it is in this space of conscious awareness that transformation and healing take place.
    But, more exciting than this comes when we ask the question, “If ‘I’ am not the contents of my mind, then what is the true nature of my Self?” We begin to get a glimpse into the true nature of Self as the space that contains, and not the contents – the ocean, not the fish! This is what I describe in my book, ‘The Path of Mindfulness Meditation’ as the Great Liberation – the freedom and flowering of of our true Buddha nature. Real healing and happiness arise when we gain insight into this reality – and it all begins when we choose to cultivate a relationship with our thoughts, memories, beliefs, perceptions and emotions – as contents, objects that arise in the Ground of Being that is our true nature.

    What does therapy do for us if not teach us how to filter our thoughts?? I have spent many a session airing my thought only to have my therapist ask me what I would say to her if she expressed those same thoughts. We need to learn to catagorize our thoughts- fleeting and no action needed; negative- how can we change it; positive- keep that one around; neutral- passing through with no effect. Mindfullness is being taught everywhere- if we are mindfull of our surroundings, we have no choice but to be mindfull of our thoughts. ( sorry for speeling,hands are cramping)

    Living each and every mimute, with knowledge of how and why I am doing what I am doing, is changing my life dramatically. Understanding what filter I am looking thru, at any given moment,gives me the advantage to be healthy and happy. Thank u, elisha!
