The same issue keeps popping up with debilitating chronic illnesses ( Iam thinking of severe Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome but any would apply.)
You are doing everything you can to fix yourself and be ‘normal’ and then the symptoms flare up so bad there is no hiding it and you are down for the count. Then you start all over again! It is very frustrating until you can get out of the denial stage and accept that this ‘is’ your life and you will be much happier if you are just yourself and not trying to be normal! the cycle really is hills and valleys, not falling down and starting over. It gets much easier when you can accept that.
I learned in only 20 years! Pretty good!

Very good! I love your insights – they remind me of those on a spiritual path who seek a “middle way” or equipoise rather than addiction to the happy/sad or good/bad cycle that keeps us feeling dependent on outer circumstances or events for whether we can enjoy life or not.
