Many years ago I did shift work which obviously played havoc with my sleep patterns.
Nowadays, retired but proactive creatively there appeared, a “different way”, though at its incept I thought it was a sleep problem.
Mainly that I was having a two phase sleep pattern , something like 4 hours followed by a waking period of around 2 to 3 hours and then another sleep of 4 hours or thereabouts depending on the time of year.
Research showed me this was the normal sleep pattern of our ancestors before the industrial revolution.
With this in mind, I have stopped fretting over the mid gap and began to use the opportunity to good effect, very often preparing meals for cooking, or other quietish domestic stuff, or even just having a net surf or reading until the body calls for the second nod off time.
Not a scientist, but I suspect this is a natural genetic biorhythmic response, our bodies telling us what is good for it is good for us as a whole?
