3 Everyday Tips for Managing Depression
Yes, when you are depressed finding an antidepressant that works for you is a great start, but there are little things throughout the day you can do to help alleviate depression.
- Attire – Often times when we get depressed we don’t want to shower, or dress nicely. I have found that when I am down, and make a concerted effort to get dressed up, it actually makes me feel better. So I break out the stilettos, try a new hair style, and moisturize more than usual. The worse I feel, the fancier I get. In other words, fake it till you make it out of your depression.
- Food – When I am depressed, and I open my refrigerator, it is empty. So, I usually end up eating out of a can because it’s easy, but not healthy. I know I will get lazy with my diet, and may tend to eat comfort food or skip the gym, so I make it a priority to stock my fridge with healthy hardy food to maintain nutrition. And, let’s be honest, I also want to avoid getting fat, which will only make matters worse.
- Clean – Sometimes my psychiatrist asks me about the condition of my place for it can be a sign of depression. So I make it a point to make my bed every morning, I don’t leave any dishes in the sink, and I make sure I have bleach wipes to keep surfaces looking clean. These are minor things but you’d be surprised how a little bit goes a long way. Keeping your place from looking like a pigsty helps.
In conclusion, with or without medication, depression is not easy to manage. But try at least one of the above suggestions, and you might be surprised how it will improve your mood, and help you to break free of your depression.
