Sex, Money, Mania – 3 Tips to Help Keep You Out of Trouble

sexandmoneycrpdMania in hindsight can be tough to face.  During a heightened episode of mania, we can act recklessly and looking back, such behavior can carry shame, embarrassment, and uneasiness. It’s okay.  There are simple things you can do to help manage your mania, and help keep you out of trouble.

Here are 3 tips to consider to help avoid making poor choices when you are faced with a manic episode:

Electric Bolts of Lightning – During mania we can get thoughts that fire through our mind that we would never imagine acting on, but do.  The impetuous thoughts coupled with irrational decisions will put you in compromising situations.  When you experience those electric thoughts immediately sit down.  Acknowledge you are in a manic state, and have manic thoughts that you don’t have to act on.  Literally, stop what you are doing, take a seat, take a deep breath, and let that impulsive thought go.

Money – Put your pocket book away.  Some of us go on loose spending sprees in a manic episode.  Don’t put yourself in situations that foster spending money.  For example, if you need to go to Target to buy toiletries, make a list beforehand of what you need, and stick to it.  Otherwise, you might find yourself walking by something that you think you need to have, or impulsively want to have, but you don’t. The last thing you want is to get to the register and fifty dollars becomes five hundred dollars, and you have no idea how it got to that point.

Sex – Mania can result in sexual promiscuity.  If you have a history of being overly sexual during a manic episode, prepare for it.  Have condemns ready to go in your possession and do your best to practice safe sex. In mania, you can get caught up in the moment and act irresponsibly, so do your best to prepare for those moments, and have protection ready to go at your fingertips.

Mania is rough, but it is manageable with well thought out preparation.  If you are not going to stick to your meds, or have not yet found a medication to curb your mind, do your best to be prepared.  Practice doesn’t only make perfect, practice makes permanent.
